FAQs

Port Moody is expanding. New housing is being built within close proximity to Rocky Point Park. We will have more residents who need access to parks and recreational space. The park faces additional demands not only from within Port Moody but also from visitors outside the city. According to the Port Moody City Parks and Trails Map, Rocky Point Park is recognized as a “flagship park, near restaurants and breweries” and “is a regional destination in the Lower Mainland” .

This expansion is not just about meeting the current demands but also preparing for the anticipated growth in visitors and residents who will seek a connection to this valuable green space. Addressing these factors will ensure that Rocky Point Park continues to serve as a cherished recreational hub for both local residents and those from the surrounding regions.

No, Rocky Point Park spans 9.5 acres. To put it in perspective, Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park covers 103 acres. The 2015 Port Moody Parks and Recreation Master Plan sets a goal of 3 acres (1.2 hectares) of new City Park for every 1000 new residents. If there are projections of 20,000 new residents within walking distance of Rocky Point Park, the city’s plan suggests the need for an additional 60 acres of new City Park.

Rocky Point Park is currently 85% smaller than we need with anticipated growth.

We can and we should. However, for park space to be truly accessible, it must be within walking distance of people’s homes. Given the planned and anticipated increased density in the vicinity of Rocky Point Park, it is essential to prioritize additional park space in that specific area.

No, the City does not own the land to the west of Rocky Point Park. Previously, the land was occupied by the Flavelle Sawmill, which is owned by the AP Group. The mill ceased operations in 2020, citing, in part, “disproportionately high property taxes” as a contributing factor (TriCity News). Presently, the land is unused and zoned for industrial purposes.

No. We are supporting population growth in Port Moody and want all newcomers to be able to access parks within walking distance of their homes. We love Port Moody and we want everyone to be able to enjoy it!
